Make Your Own Dipping Oil Mix: An Elegant DIY Seasoning for Entertaining and Everyday Use
If you’ve ever dipped a piece of warm crusty bread into a flavorful herb oil at an Italian restaurant and thought, “I need this at home,” you’re not alone. Luckily, you can recreate that gourmet experience in your own kitchen with a homemade dry Dipping Oil Mix that takes just minutes to assemble and elevates any meal into something special. Whether you’re hosting dinner guests or just enjoying a solo snack, this blend of Mediterranean herbs and spices turns simple olive oil into a luxurious flavor bomb.

This mix is a pantry staple worth having on hand. Add it to oils, dressings, marinades, and more—once you start using it, you’ll find endless ways to work it into your cooking routine. Best of all, it’s shelf-stable and takes up very little space. One small jar delivers big flavor.
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Dipping Oil Mix
This dry herb blend is inspired by the savory flavors of classic Italian cuisine—basil, oregano, thyme, and marjoram, with garlic and onion to deepen the flavor profile. A pinch of red pepper flakes brings subtle heat, while salt and pepper balance everything out. When mixed with a splash of olive oil and a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan, it creates a restaurant-quality appetizer that comes together in seconds.
This mix is incredibly versatile. While it’s best known for pairing with olive oil and bread, it also works great in pasta sauces, on roasted vegetables, or sprinkled onto pizza dough. Keep a jar in your spice rack, and you’ll always be ready for impromptu gatherings, wine nights, or even just an indulgent snack.
Ingredients in This Dipping Oil Mix
Basil
A classic herb with sweet, peppery flavor that brings freshness to the blend.
Oregano
Earthy and slightly bitter, oregano adds depth and authenticity to Mediterranean dishes.
Thyme
This aromatic herb offers a woodsy, lemony note that rounds out the mix beautifully.
Marjoram
Similar to oregano, but milder and sweeter, it adds complexity and balance.
Salt
Essential for enhancing and blending all the herb flavors in the oil.
Black Pepper
Provides a subtle kick and deepens the overall profile of the mix.
Garlic Powder
Adds a savory backbone and that irresistible garlic flavor everyone loves.
Onion Powder
Sweet and aromatic, this ingredient smooths out the spice mix and complements garlic.
Red Pepper Flakes (to taste)
Optional, but highly recommended for a touch of heat and visual flair.
This combination makes a lovely base for dipping oil and can easily be customized—add lemon zest for brightness, rosemary for a piney edge, or smoked paprika for something bolder.
How to Use This Dipping Oil Seasoning
To make dipping oil, simply combine ¼ teaspoon of dry mix with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Let it sit for a few minutes to rehydrate the herbs, then top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese for a finishing touch. Serve with crusty artisan bread, focaccia, or warm baguette slices.
Here are a few other creative uses for the mix:
- Toss it with pasta and olive oil for a quick herb-infused dish
- Sprinkle on roasted potatoes or vegetables before baking
- Stir into softened butter to make an herbed compound butter
- Use in salad dressings for Italian flavor without extra effort
- Mix into marinades for chicken, fish, or tofu
