Make Homemade Onion Soup Mix: A Pantry Staple You’ll Use Again and Again
You may be wondering—why go through the trouble of making onion soup mix from scratch when packets are cheap and widely available? The truth is, store-bought versions often contain MSG, artificial flavors, and fillers. Making your own ensures you know exactly what you’re putting into your food. You can also adjust the salt, spice, and herbs to suit your taste. It’s ideal for anyone following a clean eating lifestyle, or simply trying to cut back on processed ingredients.
Plus, this mix isn’t just for soup! Use it as a dry rub, seasoning base, dip flavoring, or casserole enhancer. It’s incredibly adaptable.

Ingredients for Onion Soup Mix
Here’s what you’ll need to create this flavorful, all-purpose dry mix:
Onion Flakes
The backbone of the recipe, these dried flakes provide that unmistakable onion flavor and texture.
Parsley
This dried herb adds a mild freshness and color contrast to the mix.
Onion Powder
A concentrated punch of savory, sweet onion flavor that amplifies the flakes.
Garlic Powder
Brings warmth and richness that complements the onion elements beautifully.
Celery Salt
A blend of salt and ground celery seed that adds depth and balance.
Paprika
This mild spice brings subtle warmth and a hint of color to the mix.
Salt
Essential for enhancing all the other flavors in the blend—adjust to taste as needed.
Pepper
Adds just the right amount of heat and depth without overpowering the mix.
All these ingredients are pantry-friendly and shelf-stable, making this mix easy to throw together anytime.
How to Use Your Onion Soup Mix
Using this homemade blend is easy: 3 tablespoons of the mix equals one store-bought packet. From there, you can:
- Add it to 2 cups of boiling water and simmer for instant onion soup.
- Stir it into sour cream for a classic onion dip.
- Rub it on beef, pork, or chicken before roasting or slow cooking.
- Sprinkle it into mashed potatoes, burgers, or casseroles for a savory flavor boost.
With a little creativity, the possibilities are endless.
