Apple Pie Spice Recipe for All Your Fall Baking

Apple pie spice blend is one of those pantry staples that instantly transforms any ordinary recipe into something deeply comforting and cozy. With its blend of warm spices, this homemade mix is perfect not just for apple pie, but for everything from oatmeal and smoothies to muffins and roasted squash. Once you make it yourself, you’ll wonder why you ever relied on store-bought versions. Crafting your own spice blends is a small but impactful way to elevate your cooking, save money, and avoid unnecessary preservatives. With just a few familiar spices, you can make a fragrant blend that tastes fresher and more vibrant than anything pre-packaged.

When you make your own apple pie spice, you’re in full control of the ingredients, proportions, and freshness. Store-bought versions may contain fillers or preservatives, but your homemade version will be nothing but pure spice goodness. Plus, you can tweak it to your taste—prefer a bolder kick of ginger or more cinnamon? No problem.

This spice blend isn’t just for pies either. You can use it to flavor so many delicious treats and even some savory dishes. Here are a few ideas:

  • Stir into your morning oatmeal or yogurt
  • Add to pancake or waffle batter
  • Mix into muffin, cookie, or quick bread recipes
  • Sprinkle over roasted sweet potatoes or carrots
  • Blend into hot cider or tea for a fall-inspired twist
  • Add to whipped cream or cream cheese spread for toast or bagels

Ingredients in Apple Pie Spice

Ground Cinnamon
Warm and sweet, this is the foundation of apple pie spice and adds that unmistakable nostalgic aroma.

Ground Nutmeg
A little goes a long way—nutmeg brings a hint of richness and complexity that deepens the flavor profile.

Ground Cloves
Bold and slightly peppery, cloves give the spice blend a touch of earthy warmth and spice.

Ground Allspice
With notes of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in one, allspice adds extra depth and dimension to the mix.

Ground Ginger
Zesty and warm, ginger adds brightness and a subtle heat that balances the sweetness.

Cardamom
This aromatic spice gives a floral, citrusy twist that rounds out the blend beautifully.

Each ingredient brings something unique to the table, and together, they create a balanced, full-bodied spice mix you’ll want to sprinkle on everything.

How to Use Apple Pie Spice Blend

This blend is a go-to seasoning for fall, but don’t let the name limit your creativity. You can use it year-round in baking, cooking, and drinks. Some ideas:

  • Add to classic apple pie filling or any fruit crisp
  • Stir into cream cheese or frosting for spice-infused treats
  • Use in spice rubs for pork or chicken
  • Sprinkle over roasted apples or pears
  • Blend into smoothies or protein shakes for a warming kick
  • Mix with sugar for a sweet spice topping on toast or muffins

It also makes a beautiful gift when packaged in a cute jar with a handwritten label.

Label Your Jars!

This recipe is printed on a dishwasher-safe label made for the lids of mason jars! Each label has the recipe to refill the jar and make the item (if applicable).

You can buy each label individually, or a pack of all of the pantry labels in my website shop.

How to Store Your Spice Blend

Store your apple pie spice blend in an airtight glass container or spice jar, away from heat and direct sunlight. If stored properly, the blend will stay fresh and fragrant for up to a year, though it’s likely to be used up long before then!

For an added personal touch, label your jar with the date it was mixed and consider making a batch during the holidays for gift-giving or fall baking days with friends and family.
