Why Make Homemade Croutons & Bread Crumbs?

Reduce Food Waste

Every year, millions of loaves of bread go to waste. By repurposing stale bread, you’re not only saving money but also cutting down on food waste and helping the environment.

Save Money

Store-bought croutons and breadcrumbs can be pricey, and they often contain preservatives and artificial ingredients. Making your own is a cost-effective and healthier alternative.

Customize to Your Taste

Homemade croutons and breadcrumbs allow you to experiment with different seasonings. Whether you prefer garlic parmesan croutons or spicy cajun breadcrumbs, the choice is yours!

How to Make Homemade Croutons

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

✔ Set your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Prepare the Bread

✔ Cut stale bread into bite-sized cubes. The size is up to you, but smaller cubes crisp up faster.

Step 3: Season the Bread

✔ Add the cubes to a large mixing bowl.
✔ Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
✔ Toss the bread gently to ensure every piece is evenly coated.

Step 4: Bake Until Crispy

✔ Spread the coated bread cubes onto the baking sheet in a single layer.
✔ Bake for 15–20 minutes, stirring halfway through for even crispiness.
✔ Remove from the oven once the croutons are golden brown and crunchy.

Step 5: Cool & Store

✔ Let the croutons cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. They’ll stay fresh for up to two weeks!

How to Make Homemade Bread Crumbs

Option 1: Using Croutons

✔ Once croutons have fully cooled, add them to a blender or food processor.
✔ Pulse until they break down into fine or coarse breadcrumbs, depending on preference.

Option 2: Making Directly from Bread

✔ Instead of cubing the bread, tear it into smaller chunks.
✔ Pulse in a blender or food processor until you achieve your desired crumb texture.
✔ Spread the breadcrumbs on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 10–15 minutes, stirring halfway through.

Step 3: Store for Future Use

✔ Let the breadcrumbs cool completely before transferring them to a sealed jar or container.
✔ Store in a cool, dry place for up to a month or in the freezer for longer storage.
