How to Make Homemade Ketchup: A Simple and Delicious Recipe
Ketchup is a staple condiment in many households, but the store-bought version often contains preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and added sugars. Making your own homemade ketchup at home is not only easy but also gives you full control over the ingredients. By using fresh, natural produce like tomatoes and enhancing the flavor with spices like cinnamon and cayenne, you can create a rich, flavorful ketchup that’s perfect for fries, burgers, or any dish that needs a zesty kick.

Ingredients for Homemade Ketchup
- 1 pound ripe tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ medium sweet onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
- ⅛ teaspoon allspice
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne
- Salt and pepper to taste
Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Homemade Ketchup
1. Roast the Tomatoes, Onion, and Garlic
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Quarter and core the tomatoes and add them to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper, or use an oven-safe dish. Quarter the onion and peel the garlic cloves, adding them to the pan as well. Drizzle the mixture with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Toss everything together so that the vegetables are evenly coated. Roast in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes until everything softens and starts to caramelize.
2. Blend the Roasted Ingredients
Once roasted, let the vegetables cool slightly. Transfer everything into a food processor or blender and process until smooth. This will form the base of your homemade ketchup. To ensure the texture is smooth and consistent, strain the sauce through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any excess juices.
3. Cook the Ketchup Mixture
Transfer the tomato pulp into a saucepan, and add the remaining ingredients: apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir the mixture together, bringing it to a simmer over medium heat. Cook uncovered for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
4. Cool and Store Your Ketchup
Once the ketchup has thickened, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool. Store your homemade ketchup in a glass jar for up to one month in the fridge. To extend its shelf life, consider freezing smaller portions in a ¼ cup Souper Cube tray. These small portions thaw easily in a glass jar in the fridge, ensuring you always have fresh ketchup when needed.
Why Make Homemade Ketchup?
Making homemade ketchup offers several benefits over store-bought versions:
- Control over Ingredients: Homemade ketchup allows you to customize the sweetness and flavor to your liking. You can avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives commonly found in commercial ketchups.
- Fresher Taste: Using fresh, ripe tomatoes and natural sweeteners like brown sugar and honey creates a richer, more vibrant flavor.
- Customizable Spice Level: By adjusting the amount of cayenne pepper, you can control the heat level to suit your taste. You can also add extra herbs and spices to give it a unique twist.
Recipe Variations
Spicy Ketchup
If you love a bit of heat in your ketchup, feel free to increase the cayenne or even add chili flakes or hot sauce for an extra kick. You can also experiment with adding smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
Sweet Ketchup
For a sweeter version, try increasing the brown sugar or adding more honey. You can also add a bit of maple syrup for a different type of sweetness and a richer depth of flavor.
Herbed Ketchup
Want to make your ketchup more aromatic? Add a pinch of oregano, thyme, or even rosemary during the cooking phase for a herbaceous twist. Fresh herbs will infuse their flavors into the ketchup as it simmers.
Storage Tips for Homemade Ketchup
Homemade ketchup is best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To extend the shelf life, freeze the ketchup in Souper Cube trays or ice cube trays for easy portioning. When ready to use, simply defrost in a glass jar in the fridge overnight. Homemade ketchup can be stored for up to one month in the fridge, and frozen portions last for up to three months.
Uses for Homemade Ketchup
The beauty of making your own ketchup is its versatility. It’s the perfect accompaniment for:
- Fries and Sweet Potato Fries: Enjoy your crispy fries with fresh, flavorful ketchup.
- Burgers and Hot Dogs: Use it on homemade burgers and grilled hot dogs for that classic American flavor.
- Sandwiches and Wraps: Spread ketchup on sandwiches, wraps, or even grilled cheese for added zest.
- Eggs: A spoonful of ketchup makes a great addition to scrambled eggs or a breakfast sandwich.
- Homemade Fries: Whether baked, fried, or air-fried, your homemade fries will taste amazing with this homemade ketchup.
