Zesty Orange Syrup to Sweeten Up Any Recipe
There’s something undeniably cheerful about the taste of fresh orange—bright, tangy, and bursting with sunshine. Turning that vibrant citrus flavor into a syrup is one of the best ways to bottle up that sunshine and use it year-round. Whether you’re sweetening your morning iced tea, adding flair to a cocktail, or drizzling it over pancakes, homemade orange simple syrup is an easy, versatile way to infuse dishes and drinks with real citrus flavor.
Unlike store-bought syrups filled with artificial flavors and preservatives, this orange syrup is made entirely from real fruit, making it both delicious and naturally refreshing. It’s a perfect addition to your DIY syrup collection—and it only takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Ingredients
Oranges
Use fresh oranges for both juice and peel—just be sure to avoid the white pith to prevent bitterness.
White Sugar
Adds the sweetness needed to balance the tang of the citrus and help preserve the syrup.
Filtered Water
Combines with sugar and juice to create the smooth, pourable base of the syrup.
Directions
- Start by washing your oranges thoroughly, especially if you’re using the peels. Slice the oranges in half and juice them directly into a medium saucepan.
- Once you’ve juiced the oranges, peel the rinds and add them to the saucepan as well, taking care to remove any white pith, which can create a bitter flavor.
- Add the sugar and water to the saucepan. Place over medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture reaches a gentle simmer.
- Simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes. This allows the orange peel to release its oils into the syrup and gives it a deeper, more aromatic citrus flavor.
- Remove the pan from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature. Strain out the solids using a fine mesh strainer, and transfer the liquid to a clean, airtight container.
- Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
Optional Flavor Variations
This orange syrup is incredibly flexible. You can build on the base recipe with other ingredients for even more depth and complexity:
- Vanilla – Stir in a splash of vanilla extract for a creamsicle-inspired twist.
- Cinnamon – Add a cinnamon stick while the syrup simmers for a warm, spiced version.
- Clove or Star Anise – Drop one or two whole spices into the pot for a cozy winter vibe.
- Lemon or Lime Zest – Introduce other citrus peels to add complexity and brightness.
Just remember to remove any whole spices or peels before storing the syrup.
Delicious Ways to Use Orange Simple Syrup
The uses for this syrup are nearly endless. Here are some favorite ways to bring that citrus flavor to life:
- Cocktails – Use it in margaritas, gin fizzes, mojitos, or whiskey sours for a fresh orange note.
- Mocktails & Sodas – Mix with sparkling water, mint, or berries for a non-alcoholic refresher.
- Teas & Coffees – Stir into iced tea or cold brew for a bright twist on your caffeine fix.
- Breakfast Toppers – Drizzle over waffles, pancakes, or French toast for a citrusy upgrade.
- Dessert Glazes – Brush onto cakes, cupcakes, or pound cake for a subtle citrus finish.
- Fruit Salad – A spoonful of syrup enhances the natural sweetness of fruit and adds a glossy finish.
A Natural Way to Sweeten and Flavor
What makes this recipe extra special is that you’re using the whole orange—juice and peel—to create a syrup that’s both rich and naturally flavorful. The zestiness from the peel gives it complexity, while the juice keeps it vibrant and sweet. You won’t find this kind of freshness in bottled syrups or flavored extracts.
This recipe is also great for reducing food waste. If you have extra oranges sitting around, or peels left over from another dish, you can easily turn them into a delicious syrup. Plus, you can freeze any leftover syrup in small cubes to preserve it longer and use it whenever needed.
Your New Favorite Syrup Awaits
Homemade orange simple syrup is easy to make, packed with real flavor, and endlessly versatile. With just a few everyday ingredients and about 15 minutes of simmer time, you can whip up a batch of sunshine in a bottle. Keep some in your fridge, and you’ll always have a citrusy flavor boost ready for drinks, desserts, or a creative twist in the kitchen.
Once you’ve tried this recipe, you might find yourself experimenting with all kinds of citrus—from blood oranges to tangerines—for even more flavor possibilities. It’s the perfect starting point for infusing your drinks and dishes with bright, natural sweetness all year long.
